This is an HDR (3 images) of a lava lamp in the background, with a fiber optic tree in the foreground. Roughly f/16, 0.5 – 1.3 sec exposure, ISO 200. Nothing fancy. I tried to keep it photorealistic in Photomatix, so this is close to what you’d really see.

Pretty awesome. I need to try HDR one of these days. My understanding is for the 3 pics 1 should be overexposed and 1 underexposed. Is this what you did? Also what software did you use to combine for the hdr?
I used the Photomatix app on my iMac to do thus HDR, with a very little adjustment afterwards in Photoshop. Photoshop also has an HDR feature, recently improved in CS5, and there are also other alternatives, too. Generally, yes, you take 3, 5, 7, or 9 photos at differing exposures. This one used 3 as you said…one underexposed, one overexposed, and the basic. Works pretty well, but is still a bit of an art. Give it a try…it’s fun!
